More Churches
St. Andrews, Marks Tey
I think the vicar of Aldham also looks after this
church but I could be wrong. It is very old and has a wooden Tower. The
spire from what I remember is stone. Certainly both Donna and
I have ancestors that were baptised there and probably married there as
well.
Aldham Church
The church used to be sited west of the village but in 1853 it was
decided to move it to a more central position. All the old materials were used
with some exceptions and a vestry and tower with spire were added. The Church
dates from 14th. century. My 3rd. g.grandfather was the first body to be
interred in the new church yard.
West Bergholt Church
Although still a consecrated site the church is
not in regular use, it appears that major rebuilding had occurred in the
14th century to the earlier fabric of the single-cell Saxon church. The north
wall of the original Saxon church still survives in the existing north wall
of th church, which the excavators assessed to be of the date c.A,D,1000. PCC
minutes in Latin but translated to present day language are on the
walls at back of the church. A number of my ancestors were baptised here.
